Legendary Powerlifter and Founder Louie Simmons Dies at 74


Louie Simmons, the legendary world-class powerlifter, coach, and founder of Westside Barbell, passed away At the age of 74 years. He has the credit of the man behind the famous Conjugate Method. His cause of death is not clear yet.

Westside Barbell posted about Simmons's death on its official Instagram page on March 24th, 2022.

Louie was born on October 12, 1947. At an early age, he fell in love with weight training and stepped into the world of powerlifting when he was in his early 20s. He spent the next 50 years of his life as a coach. He gave coaching to some of the sport’s most famous competitors like EliteFTS founder Dave Tate, Chuck Vogelphol, J.M. Blakely, and Jim Wendler.

Simmons is the founder of the popular Westside Barbell gym which is located in Columbus, OH. He also invented both the reverse hyper and belt squat machines. He also developed a training method called the Conjugate Method which popularized the use of chains and resistance bands for specific lifts.

He himself was an athlete. He took part in various competitions from 1979 till 2012. He mostly participated in Equipped Powerlifting.

In 2019, a documentary ‘Westside vs. The World’ featuring him was released. The documentary is available on Amazon Prime to rent and/or purchase. 

The powerlifting community is deeply saddened by this news and various famous personalities like Ed Coan, Dan Bell, Matt Wenning, Julius Maddox, etc. have paid their obituaries to the late legend.
