Google: Russian Hackers Tried to Get the Access of Nato Systems and Several Defense Ministries

Google has noticed an attempt by Russian hackers to gain access to the NATO network and several defense agencies in Eastern Europe.

According to Reuters , this is stated in a report by Google's threat analysis team, which was released on March 30.

Analysts say a phishing campaign launched by Coldriver or Callisto in Russia. The report states that the actions were directed against the NATO Training Center (NATO Center of Excellence) and the defense agencies of several Eastern European countries, but which ones are not specified.

"Emails were sent from newly created Gmail accounts to non-Google accounts, so the effectiveness of these campaigns cannot be assessed," the report said.

In 2019, the Finnish cybersecurity company F-Secure Labs wrote about Callisto as an "uncertain and serious player" hunting for European data on foreign policy and security.

Russia is known to have always denied all allegations of cyber attacks against Western countries.

NATO says it monitors some malicious cyber activities on a daily basis. They also noted that NATO training centers are not part of NATO as such. "We are in touch with them on this issue," the comment said.
