Georgia: Soldier Killed in Overnight Helicopter Crash Identified

 


Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield officials have identified the Soldier who was killed in a helicopter crash. The accident involved two UH-60 helicopters at Wright Army Airfield. The accident happened at around 2 am on March 30th, 2022.

The 3rd Infantry Division has released an official statement on the matter. According to this statement, the name of the deceased soldier is Capt. James T. Bellew. He was 26 years old.

Bellew was from Charlottesville, Virginia. He joined the Army in 2017 as a medical service officer. In 2019, he became an Aeromedical Evacuation Officer and was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Aviation Regiment, 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division in March 2020.

Col. Eric Vanek, 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade commander, has paid his obituary and called Bellew the top platoon leader in his company,

Bellew’s daily duties were important missions like medically evacuating critically ill patients of COVID-19 and taking them to a higher level of care and as he was a key member of the brigade’s 24/7 mission, his job was also to provide medical evacuation support for Soldiers and Families at Fort Stewart, Hunter Army Airfield and the tenant units.

Bellew’s previously assigned job was at Camp Casey, South Korea where he acted as a Field Medical Assistant from September 2017 to September 2018.

James received many awards and decorations. These include:

  •  The Army Achievement Medal 
  • Global War on Terrorism Service Medal
  • National Defense Service Medal
  • Army Service Ribbon
  • Korean Defense Service Medal
  • Expert Field Medical Badge
  • Army Aviator Badge.

The incident is being investigated by Special Agents from the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Division (CID). A safety investigation team from the U.S. Army Combat Readiness Center is also doing an investigation on its part.
